Guidelines for sponsoring an Oneg |
|
FOOD ITEMS · Wine and grape juice are supplied by the synagogue. · You may provide soft drinks and other types of juice if you choose to do so. · All bottles (wine, juice, soda) need to be marked on their caps with a Sharpie (in one of the under-counter bins labeled Markers) to show the date they were opened. This will help prevent the serving of expired, flat, or bad beverages in the future. · Tea and sweeteners will be in plastic zipper bags marked with the date. Please do not leave these out on the counter; instead, return them to the plastic bags when the Oneg is over. · The CBS janitor will make coffee. · Please bring one challah for use on Friday night. Challah may also be brought for Saturday morning, labeled and stored in the fridge in the kitchen. · Oneg hosts should provide cookies, cakes, fruit, and/or candy in sufficient amounts for the numbers of attendees at the service. Please call the CBS office to find out about any special occasions being celebrated, or any visiting groups which are scheduled to attend on the evening of the Oneg you sponsor. These groups can increase attendance and subsequent food needs. The general guideline for Oneg treats is 4-5 combined pieces (of cake, cookies or fruit) per person. · Please keep in mind that the policy of the synagogue is to have kosher or kosher style products. All dairy products are kosher for us. Just make sure that purchased goodies do not contain lard. In addition, please avoid peanuts, to which many individuals are allergic.
· SUPPLIES · Oneg supplies (including white plastic tablecloths, flatware, assorted paper napkins and cups for wine and coffee) are contained in the under-counter bins directly in front of the door when you walk into the kitchen. · Your group may choose to bring your own paper goods, flatware and tablecloths color-coded to your event. · Please enclose any remaining napkins and plates you take out of packaging, in plastic zipper bags (extras are in the under-counter bin marked Plastic Bags) and return them to the appropriate under-counter bins. No unwrapped items should be left in the kitchen. · Platters and (many, many) flower vases are in the Dairy pantry; other than that, there is no need to remove items from the pantry.
SET-UP · Onegs are generally set up in the social hall, unless that space is in use for another occasion, in which case tables will be arranged in the CBS lobby. The janitor will put out tables and chairs (in the social hall only) for your use. · Challah should be placed on a challah platter and covered with one of the challah covers (these are both located in the coffee preparation area of the kitchen). If your group prefers to use a special challah cover, please feel free to do so. · Prior to the service, pour grape juice (into larger cups) and wine and arrange the cups on trays. Also pour wine into the ceremonial Kiddush cup, placing it next to the challah. Trays for juice and wine are also located in the coffee preparation area. · During the Aleinu, at the end of the service, several members of your group should quietly move into the kitchen and bring the trays into the social hall, offering cups to the congregation as they exit the sanctuary. · Set out the food you bring (on your trays or on the trays in the kitchen).
CLEAN UP Please note that a group of us have done a huge clean-up in the kitchen and are looking to implement some new policies so that we can maintain the cleanliness and organization of the space. (We have only gone through the kitchen and purged many old, broken or otherwise unusable items; a professional deep-cleaning will be done shortly.) One of the main changes which will affect your group is that we are looking to keep all items in plastic bags, as part of an effort to control how long food (tea, sweeteners, etc.) remains in the kitchen, ensure the cleanliness/sanitary condition of flatware, and also to reduce the amount of paper goods on-hand at CBS. · Please wash the empty platters, the ceremonial Kiddush cup, and serving utensils and place them in the drying rack next to the sink. · Any food remaining after the Oneg should be wrapped in plastic and placed either on the counter or in the refrigerator. Thanks for your help in keeping our congregation kitchen clean and organized.
Thank you again for coming together to make Shabbat pleasant for all. |
